HSA for a child & life insurance funds

Postby admin » Tue May 19, 2009 8:39 am

Due to my weight and other health issues I cannot qualify for health insurance (I am a single parent and recently unemployed). I just applied for an HSA through Anthem for my 4yr old daughter. The salesman had me put my daughters name down as the primary applicant. I read on the this web site that a person is not eligible for an HSA if they can be claimed as a dependent. Is the salesman wrong? Or, can I no longer claim her as a dependent if she has an HSA?

Another issue I have is: My wife just recently passed away and I have the life insurance funds sitting in the bank. Since the life insurance funds are tax free, do I create bad issues for myself if I use those funds to deposit into an HSA account?
I will be collecting unemployment and SS until I can rebound from this situation.

Never mind... I just spoke with my ins. sales agent. He said he guesses my daughter is not eligible for a HSA account, I don\'t know why he didn\'t know that!
That makes my other issue nul-n-void then.
